The problem
A well-funded fintech was losing roughly 7 of every 10 users inside a 14-field, single-page KYC onboarding. Compliance required the data; the UX made it feel like filing taxes. Every abandoned signup was a paid-for user walking out the door, and the metric was quietly capping their growth.
Our solution
We kept every field the regulator needed but changed how it felt — breaking onboarding into a short, progressive three-step flow with inline validation, autosave and a visible finish line, then proving each change against the old baseline before shipping.
What we did
- Mapped the funnel with real analytics to find exactly which fields caused drop-off.
- Redesigned into three progressive steps with autosave, so no one ever loses progress or restarts.
- Added inline, real-time validation and connected Plaid to auto-fill bank details instead of manual entry.
- Rebuilt the frontend in Next.js/TypeScript for sub-second loads and full mobile parity.
- Shipped a working demo every Friday and A/B tested the new flow against the old one before full rollout.
